has anyone ever played roguelike Tales of Maj'Eyal? I saw a mention of it recently and with my huge backlog I was curious if anyone would recommend it?
I saw it mentioned on IndieStatik recently as well and was wondering the same thing! Gonna have to download it and find out I suppose.
Currently Playing: You Have To Win The Game, Pid Recently Beat: Wake 2013, Momodora, The Last Door: Chapter One
Yes I have played TOME and really liked it. Randomness can really ramp up the difficulty though. I revisit this now and then. I would recommend it and ADOM on the IndieStatik list.

Yet another game that was at one time commercial but went freeware. I'm not 100% sure it was due to poor sales or not, but regardless, it was a great little game that was worth the ten dollar asking price in my opinion. I'm just going to refer to the game as Climb from here on out just to make this easier.
Climb is a tough as nails platformer where you must make your way up this castle to rescue the princess from some crazy warlock and his mechanical army. In the descriptions of the game it is told as having an old-school challenge, and if any of you know anything about old-school games then you know it's pretty challenging, and they aren't lying, this game is tough. There are easier difficulties however, for those that don't like there games all that challenging, so don't fret just yet.
There are fifteen different stages, three dozen enemy types and all sorts of other platformy obstacles in your way. It also has a very cool look too it, hand drawn almost, with a water color look perhaps? I'm not sure, but it looks really good, I can appreciate it. As for how long this one takes to beat, I'm unsure, probably a few hours. I've yet to beat it myself. I did play a chunk of it, really enjoyed it, also got insanely frustrated at it, hehe. I suggest giving it a shot if you enjoy platformers, and a challenge.
I have to say: I really appreciate your recommendations, thanks for them. I found the half of them nice for my entertaining and downloaded them. So far I can say: The Button Affair is very very beautiful game with almost overwhelming soundtrack! But you only play 15 minutes for one walkthrough. I enjoyed it and think that there is a lot of potential!

So RPGMaker games are like a dime a dozen. Seriously, they are relatively easy to make, nigh everyone can make one, a lot of them aren't that good at all, a few of them do however stand out. You can tell when someone has put a lot of time and effort into one of these games in most cases. And I only plan on mentioning the highest of quality RPGMaker games here. Legionwood I feel, is one of these cases.
So I only just started playing Legionwood myself, didn't really get all that far into it yet. Already I can tell it's going to be better than a number that I have tried. Some early game spoilers ahead: You play as Laan, just an ordinary kid, who is later accused of assassinating the king! Gasp! The story unfolds from there, seems kind of typical for a jRPG, but it works. It's got some real nice hand drawn cutscenes and character portraits. Lots of sidequests and stuff as well, always nice.
Legionwood is also rather lengthy for a freeware game, clocking in at twenty plus hours. That's about the same length as a cartridge Final Fantasy if you think about it. I've been following the developer of the game on twitter, as I do a lot of indie developers, and this guy is very much a book reader, and therefore must be intelligent, or at the very least should know a good story and knows how to put a good story together in game. At least I hope that is the case. It has a good rating on Desura, I feel Desura doesn't have very accurate ratings though to be completely honest, so you can take that as you will. Regardless I feel this game is worth a shot if you're into jRPGs.
So I'll just say it now, this weekend could be one of the days I miss. I have to work night-shift, 3 nights in a row. Because of that I might not be able to get to this, I will try though, but if I do miss a day, that's why.
009. Frogatto & Friends
Trailer:
Developer: Wesnoth Team Platform: PC, Mac, Linux, iOS (iOS not free) Release: 2010
From the guys that brought you Battle of Wesnoth, a crazy in-depth turn-base strategy game set in a fantasy world, comes a cutesy platformer? Starring a frog? Huh? I hardly believed it myself, but it's true! A lot of the team that has been working on the free to play Battle of Wesnoth have also been working on Frogatto & Friends, a really good fun platformer. I find it pretty awesome to see them stray that far from there norm.
So the last time I played and beat Frogatto, it was version 1.03. Now it's version 1.3. So many amazing changes: Graphical changes, more music, achievements, a new arcade mode, different difficulties, and those are things I just noticed in the first 10 minutes of playing the new version. They just released this new patch two months ago, and for whatever reason they were kind of hush hush about it.
In the game you play as Frogatto, a lazy and quixotic little frog. So you make your way to town early on in the game, searching for a job. You stop buy quick to help Nene with an ant infestation, then continue on. You encounter an odd owl on your way, but are quick to shrug him off, then once you get to town you notice something odd... I will leave you hanging there. It's a very good, well made game. It's amazing a game like this doesn't cost money to be honest. Well actually, if you have an iOS device and want to purchase the game for said device, it will set you back maybe a few bucks. However PC, Mac, and Linux are all free to download.
So Pragmatica is a puzzle game, I decided I would switch it up a bit. So the human race, done working. You are all welcome to be lazy. Robots are the future, just have them do all the manual labor. However, someone has to program them, that's where you come in.
How it's played it, you control these robots by inputting commands, simple right? Well, you can only put in one set of commands, and there are several robots on the screen at once, following the same set of commands. It can get a little crazy, trying to get them to dodge each other while getting their tasks done. There's the obvious commands like moving left and right, but also picking up objects and dropping objects at certain locations.
The story is told a little bit like Space-Chems story, though the gameplay isn't really anything like it. Between stages you will see little newspaper clippings and other times just a lot of text. The graphics are really nice and all hand-drawn, and the music is superb. Hive I feel is one of those indie developers that don't get the credit they deserve. All of their games are so polished and very fun to play and yet not many have heard of them. I highly recommend checking them out, if not this game than another by them.
Never did play much of this one. Reason being I was never good at Megaman like games. Those that are into those types of games have nothing but good things to say about this game though. I probably should try it, it's not that I don't like the genre, I'm just not good at it.
So in this game you play as a blue ninja named Hayate, your girlfriend Kinuhime was killed and now you're out for revenge. Can revenge bring back your dead girlfriend though? There are sixteen different stages in this one, I imagine several boss fights, and it even has multiple endings.
The graphical style is that retro look from the Megaman games and the music is pretty decent, what I've heard of it anyways. The game uses a two button control method, typical jump and attack, as well as the arrow keys to move which is a given. Supposedly the game offers quite a challenge and unfortunately there is no way to save your game. You have continues I guess, but you can't save, so you'll have to play start to finish in one sitting.
Think Super Meat Boy is hard? Then take a jab at this platformer. In this online flash game, you play a pig called Super Pig who is trying to save his loved one. Sound familiar? In this game, death is inevitable. Only through bloodshed can the path to Super Pig's loved one be revealed. Be prepared to die, die, and die again. Many have tried, but few have succeeded. Will you have the guts to play through the whole game, or would you be one of countless who rage quit? Enjoy.
First time hearing about it and the idea is magnificent... but, it was insanely difficult and i rage-quit almost immediately. This is one of the many titles, including those that Soli has mentioned so far, that I can't believe isn't commercially released.
Wow, managed to pull it off even working nightshift. Awesome. Also, really like the Sosowski addition.
012. Das Uberleben: Dem Groben Sprung
Gameplay:
Developer: Beau Blyth Platform: PC Release: 2010
Uberleben for short, is an arcade sky-diving simulator for up to 7 players local co-op! It's a German word meaning to survive or outlive. That's what your trying to do here in this sky-diving game, outlive your friends if you happen to be playing with some. Lot's of fun single player as well.
It's a really fun game, not sure how big a write up I can do on it though. It's got a real retro look to it, and though it doesn't have music that I can remember, it's got some pretty amazing sound effect. I should mention that the music in the gameplay video isn't actually in the game. The controls are easy enough, just the arrow keys, or other keys if you happen to be playing co-op. Oh, I think there are probably punch and kick keys as well! I never actually got to use them because I never played co-op, but you can actually kick people into stalagmites and whatever else.
There's a bunch of cool stages, jungle, volcano, ice world, and the death star! I actually found the Death Star stage to be the most disappointing to be honest. It just doesn't look good, it's all a flat grey color, just bleh. A lot of the other stages look really cool though. I forgot to mention there's also rings you can collect on the way down to increase your score, and you can actually beat the levels, play on an easy enough difficulty and you'll see, some of the tougher ones you'll start to wonder if there's an end though. Good fun, I recommend it.
Warning: DO NOT play if you are prone to seizures or heart attacks This is a game created by students at DePaul University for the 2010 International Games Festival, where it was one of the winners. This is an exploration game where your movement is based on the sense of sound, where the pitch is visualization through various optical illusions. Stuck in a demonic world, you must find all the children trapped by the world and thus escape this alternate reality. Enjoy but heed the warning I have provided.

Holy crap is this free? I know I've seen this game before, but I think it was a long time ago... and it might have had a different name then. Didn't realize it was free, and I totally forgot about it! Awesome!
Sometimes I just sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits.
Devil's Tuning Fork is a really great game, I remember playing it awhile back and enjoying it. I just wished it were longer! So good but so short.
013. Gun Girl 2
Trailer:
Developer: BlueEagle Productions Platform: PC Release: 2010
Gun Girl 2 is a pretty amazing little Metroidvania style game. You can play as either Gun Girl or Gun Guy. One morning you wake up and the world is just infested with zombies, so you decide to go out and figure out what the heck happened. It doesn't sound like much, but the story does expand a bit beyond that, there are some NPCs along the way you meet up with and what not.
The graphical style is very cartoony, and gory, tons of zombie blood just spitting out everywhere. There is some cussing, it is a mature game after all, regardless of the look. The soundtrack is also pretty amazing, as you can probably tell by the trailer (unless of course you're not into that kind of music, to each his or her own).
The game will take you 8-10 hours to beat, lots and lots of weapons and upgrades as well as different abilities to get. You upgrade your weapons like you do in Cave Story actually, you collect these little 'G's the fall after killing zombies, the more you collect the higher level weapon you have until you max it out. However if you get hit a few times, it down grades. A bunch of secrets in the game as well, two different worlds to explore, a normal world and then Hell. A super fun game that I recommend you all try out.

ToME is a great roguelike turn-based rpg! It has some really in depth item and character depth, and you can unlock many different types of hidden characters through different quests. I haven't truly sunk my teeth in it, maybe 5-8 hours, but it is well developed and well supported. I would definitely recommend this, for casual or hardcore gamers.
Have you played Super Smash Bros? Did you wish you could play in on your PC? Well with Super Smash Land, a demake of Super Smash Bros, the game will feel and look like you are playing it on the original Nintendo Gameboy. Keeping some classic character and stages while mixing in some other familiar character and stages, this will be surely bring Nintendo fans and general retro gamers alike a lot of fun.
