It is hard to pick one, but I think people new to indie games should play the iconic games of the 'indie' movement:

- World of Goo
- Braid
- flower / Journey
- Minecraft
- Starscape
- Gish

I hate Gish.

Machinarium or Gemini Rue are fantastic indie point and click games, great stories. Machinarium is utterly charming.

There is also Thirty Flights of Loving which is super short, but great, its a short story in first person view, and the commentary is great to go through and find out what the dev was trying to achieve. Stuff like that makes Indie games great, you get closer to the game and the devs are trying something different, just to try it.

If you want more violence go for Hotline Miami, hyper violent game with an amazing sound track or you could try Chivalry Medieval Warfare, a first person melee mutliplayer game

Speaking of Blendo - Atom Zombie Smasher is amazing. Hours of gameplay there...

It really depends on what type of game you're looking to play. I'll list a few of my favourites from a bunch of genres, though (spammy time!):

Point and click:
Machinarium (Truly wonderful game)
The Journey Down: Chapter One
Thirty Flights of Loving (Blendo games)
Gemini Rue

Platformer:
Out There Somewhere
Wake (get the 2013 edition)
Cortex Command
Waking Mars
Dustforce (Extremely difficult!)
Super Crate Box (Free!)
Megabyte Punch
Rochard (Excellent sound design)
Climb to the Top of the Castle! (Free!)

Turn Based:
Frozen Synapse (One of my favourite games ever, killer soundtrack)
Greed Corp
Flotilla (More Blendo)
Pitman
NEO Scavenger

Puzzle
Toki Tori (And anything by TwoTribes games)
English Country Tune
Corrypt (Free!)
Braid
Quantum Conundrum (Really really good)

Adventure:
Bastion
Torchlight I & Torchlight II
Magicka
Seiklus (Free! Don't miss this one)
Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers (Very fun sandboxy game)

Other:
Minecraft
Hammerfight (Physics!)
King Arthur's Gold (Fantastic multiplayer)
Starforge (Haven't played it yet, but it looks wicked)
Dungeon Defenders
Legend of Grimrock
Metal Drift
Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP
Nitronic Rush (Free!)
Audiosurf
Kerbal Space Program (Massive time sink)

I'm missing a ton of great games in this, but it's a start anyway. I guess it's probably clear at this point, but I play a lot of indie games.

You will get as many answers as there are players.

My choice:

Platformer (but i didn`t play a lot of platformers to be honest):
Rochard
Cargo Commander (not sure if it`s an Indie game :))
Wooden Sensei

Turn Based Tactical games:
Underrail ALPHA (this is how fallout 3 should have looked and played like imho)
Xenonauts ALPHA (imvho, better then the new Xcom gameplay-wise)
UFO: Alien Invasion (a free game)
Exodus Wars: Fractured Empire ALPHA (early alpha BUT if you overlook poor animations/graphic at this moment this looks like a diamond gem to me)
Frozen Synapse

Adventure:
Bastion
both Torchlights
Magicka
Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers (but it gets boring fast, at least for me)

Tower Defense/similar:
Defense Grid
Revenge of the Titans (loved it at first but it got me bored after a few hours)

Space games (various sub-genres):
SPAZ
FTL
Salvation Prophecy (a real gem, unfortunately not well known. You get RPG elements, TPP space arcade shooting, FPP planetary conquest and strategy in the later game)
MinerWars 2081- i got very dissapointed with this game (there supposed to be an opened world with sandbox elements). This is also the only Indie game i don`t trust the Devs (sometimes it looks like they are just money grabbers)- nevertheless the game is awesome if you like space arcade shooters.

2hard to name a genre:
McDroid BETA(i fell in love with this one, Devs are most community-friendly i have ever seen) - you can call it rts, tower defense, action shooter.... HIGHLY recommended imho
Mobiloid- it`s essentially a 3d platformer where you play as a robot- gather additional parts and then use them to get to previously not accessible parts of the map.
Rawbots ALPHA- just two words (GET IT).. if you like building and programming robots. I wouldn`t even call this piece of gold a game.
Cortex Command- only get it if you like spending alot of time to learn the game mechanic. But you will have HEAPS of fun once/if you do.

I guess there are many more but i`ll stop here ;) Btw, i have bolded the games on the list i like the most.

Oh, i forgot to mention that some of the games above are actually betas :P.

Both great games, SPAZ is more strategic and a larger scale(Its on sale on Steam atm, for silly monies). FTL is a great rogue like, designed to be hard, I love it.

Speaking of rogue likes Dungeons of Dredmor is a great one, good sense of humour. (Its on sale on Steam atm, for silly monies too)

I thought two pretty great point and click titles that were left out were Kentucky Route Zere and Resonance. Both are fantastic.

At times I felt that Braid was a bit too obnoxious in its "look how artsy this game is" moments. I'm glad to see Chivalry Medieval Warfare wa son here, because it's absolutely fantastic. Very fun, very intense.

I didn't see anybody mention Mark of the Ninja, but I guess that's kind of in the grey area for indie games with those Klei/Microsoft products. Super house of Dead Ninjas just came out yesterday on Steam, and it's absolutely fantastic, though not what I'd consider one of the best.

Binding of Isaac wasn't mentioned, despite it being one of the most addictive indie twin sticks I've played, with a really cool artstyle. QUBE was an excellent first-person puzzler, and I'm nearing the finish every day. Very much enjoying my time with it. Super Hexagon is one of the best pick up and play indie games out there. Antichamber is thought-provoking and very much an atmospheric experience that actually makes you think. Dead Pixels is some of the most fun I've had with a sidescroller in a while. DLC Quest is a cheap, funny platformer that is remarkably fun, albeit a little short. Dungeons of Dredmor is a remarkably fun (and funny) rogue-like that can really chew up your time. Escape Goat ois one of the best puzzle platformers I've played in awhile. I can't leave out FTL, because it's amazing. I've really enjoyed playing Eschalon Book 2 here as of late, as well. Hotline Miami is a fun, fast-paced, awesome looking action/tactical game that deserves to be played. Not really a fan of Bullet Hells, but Jamestown is what I'd be playing if I was. Legend of Grimrock is a fun rpg that harks back to classic titles. Magicka is a very, very fun co-op game, although I had issues running it on my over-specced rig. Proteus is a remarkable exploration game with a beautiful artstyle and sound design. Smooth Operators is a quirky little management game that holds your attention for a few hours, but seems to fail to do so after that (despite those first few horus beign very, very fun). Snapshot is a cute little platformer with a fun gimmick and a story that hooks you fairly wuickly and makes you wonder. Terrarria, of course, is a very, very fun game, though I found it to be lacking after I was fully geared up. Minecraft, of course, is the Indie game success story, and for a good reason. It's fun. Under the garden has a very, very cool art-style and some pretty neat survival gameplay. VVVVVV is a remarkably challenging, but very fun platformer. Home is a pretty fun, short, but predictable point-and-click game.

So, sorry for scattered thoughts and huge walls of text. I was pretty much just dumping my head onto my keyboard.

TL;DR

Platformers
-Mark of the Ninja
-Super Meat Boy
-Dustforce
-VVVVVV
-Closure
-Snapshot
-DLC Quest

Point-and-Clicks
-Resonance
-Kentucky Route Zero
-Home
-Lone Survivor

RPGs
-Eschalon Book 2
-Legends of Grimrock
-Dungeons of Dredmor
-Terrarria

Others
-Binding of Isaac
-FTL
-Q.U.B.E.
-Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
-Antichamber
-Hotline Miami
-Minecraft
-Magicka
-Smooth Operators
-Under the Garden
-Jamestown
-Escape Goat
-Dead Pixels
-Proteus

Again, just putting unstructured thoughts together, and adding some games that haven't been mentioned

Mount & Blade: Warband - if that counts as Indie

BTW, the originator of this post is a spammer. What they do is put their etail site on their profile and make a post to drive traffic which gets their information crawled, it isn't for getting clicks (directly), but the backlink [located on OP profile] on the active article increases their site's page rank with the search engines.

I think there are a lot of obvious ones here but also a couple curiously missing in this thread..

Minecraft - Enough said.
Terraria - Surprisingly deep, it will suck you in..
Braid - Pretentious but wonderful
The Binding of Isaac - Persistently new and exciting
VVVVVV - Charming to the point you don't mind dying all the time
Super Hexagon - Delightfully impossible
LIMBO - Just a perfectly tailored side-scrolling experience
Spelunky (PC) - Epic platforming time-sink (and free too!)
Treasure Adventure Game - Truly an unmissable adventure in a well designed world! (also free, go get it!)
Zombies - The game I've had the most fun with from IGS :) ..and then I bought the soundtrack!
Black Mesa - This is an honourable mention for the fan-made original Half-Life remake, which was one of my gaming highlights of last year, Vapourware no more!

Most of this is just roped in from my Backloggery account, there are plenty more! Does anyone use Backloggery?

In fact.. don't answer. I'll make a thread.. somewhere..

If I had to pick based on what indie game has given me the most hours of entertainment for my money, then Minecraft is far and away #1. Torchlight and Torchlight 2 are tied for a distant second.

Zombies., Caster, the Sigma Team shooter games, Chime and Shatter all get honorable mentions though.
