Hi guys, with the influx of game jams out there, I decided to start a thread covering some games I thought stood out from them. The best known game jam is the Ludum Dare, but there are many other ones out there. While most of the games never end up as polished and completed products, there are commercial games that have came out of game jams. Examples include McPixel, Evoland, and Nuclear Throne.

List of Notable Game Jams

Recurring:
Ludum Dare
Global Game Jam
Nordic Game Jam
One Game A Month
The Arbitrary Game Jam

Reddit and other game making communities tend to hold game jams. I will look at game jams as they happen (feel free to chime in)

Here is a ongoing jam: Cassette 50- mini Compo

It is basically making crappy games just like the Cassette 50. There is already quite a few games in the compo, and just to sum it up, play these for yourself and determine if they are of poor quality.

Okay I know you guys know about Flappy Bird, but did you hear about the Flappy Jam? In response to the takedown of the game, this jam was set up in a similar fashion to the Candy Jam. There are already 44 games made for it.

Theme: make a hard, almost unplayable game.use assets inspired (not ripped) from classics. FLAPPY word or gameplay not mandatory. have fun, be supportive. hate must not win

And yes, I will play each and then post my thoughts on the ones that stood out the most.

Let the Flapping begin ;)

Game: Floppy Disk
Platform: Browser (itch.io)
Developer: MentalFish

Description:
The Floppy Disk Demagnetising Simulator

Meet Ms. Disk, Floppy Disk. She is a standard density 3.5" diskette, trying to last as far as possible in life, until she meets her ultimate fate of being wiped by the menacing and threat of magnetism.

Analysis:

Well, in a nutshell, it's a Flappy Bird clone with Floppy Disk instead of a bird and magnets instead of pipes. There really isn't much to it, except it does tell you how much data was spent playing the game (if you were curious).

Verdict:

If you like Flappy Bird, you should try it out, as you should for most of the games in the Flappy Jam. But don't expect something amazing.

Game: Maverick Bird
Platform: Browser (itch.io)
Developer: Terry Cavanagh

Game Description:
It's a Fan Game (no descriptions needed)

Analysis:

While most game jams are done by little known devs or amateurs, this one is actually quite well-known. If the art-style and music sound familiar, don't be surprised. Terry Cavanagh was the dev of Super Hexagon and VVVVVV. I would not be surprised if some of the assets were borrowed from codes of his other games. The music and art is great. I have really enjoyed it, yet just like Super Hexagon, I suck at Maverick Bird.

Verdict:

It might be the best Flappy Bird clone in this jam. You must play this (then tell me how you did) ;)

Game: FLAPPYBALT
Platform: Browser
Developer: Adam Saltsman

Game Description:
C'mon you know it's a Flappy Bird Clone

Analysis:

This time, it's the dev of Canabalt Adam Saltsman with his own spin on Flappy Bird. He uses his assets from his signature game. Instead of progressing in a linear fashion, you try to avoid the spikes from the 4 sides.

Verdict:

A lot more original than most of the entries, this is definitely worth a play.

NaNoReNo 2014 is going on for the month of March. During this month, developers make visual/kinetic novels.

I will hopefully cover them when some of them are complete.

Here are examples of ones in progress:

Another Game Jam that has caught my attention is the Insanity Jam.

Jam Description:

The Insanity Jam is a relaxed, experimental, game jam that utilizes orteil42 (creator of Cookie Clicker)'s random game idea generator. This Jam aims to be inclusive, welcoming game creators anywhere in the world of all skill levels, from newbies to professionals.

The Jam is split into 2 parts: the "Main" Jam runs from April 1st to April 4th (and is mainly for extra challenge/bragging rights), and the "Extended" or "Full" Jam, during which developers may clean up their project or continue to make new submissions, runs until April 8th.
